Where do our favorite wardrobe staples come from?

High heels were originally worn by men. Invented in Persia in the 10^th century, heels were designed to give wealthy men more height and status. Heels also “clicked” into stirrups, making horseback riding easier and smoother.

Heels soon spread to Europe as status symbol. Eventually, women adopted the trend but with taller, thinner heels to give a more feminine appearance. By the 1800s, women of all social classes were wearing heels in daily life, even those who worked as farmers and housemaids. (Imagine working the fields in heels!)

The little black dress was popularized in the 1920s by the queen of fashion herself: Coco Chanel. She wanted to design a long-lasting, versatile, affordable, and accessible dress that would last for years. And she did! The LBD’s chic simplicity has made the it a wardrobe essential for the past 100 years.

Trench coats may be a fashion staple these days, but they were originally designed for British Army officers in the First and Second World War. These waterproof, khaki garments were used “in the trenches,” hence the name. 

After WWII, trench coats started entering the fashion scene. Because high-ranking officers had worn them, trench coats were seen as respectable and professional, making them perfect for businesswear.

When Humphrey Bogart wore a trench coat in Casablanca and Peter Sellers wore one in Pink Panther, the trench coat instantly became a popular outerwear choice. Burberry soon went on to make the trench coat even more accessible for men and women alike.

Sunglasses may date back to over 2,000 years ago when Inuit tribes used walrus bones, driftwood, or caribou bones over their eyes to protect them from the bright light of the sun reflecting from the snow.

Also in 12^th-century China, smoked quartz lens panes similar to sunglasses were used by magistrate judges to prevent people reading their expressions.

However, modern sunglasses, as we know them, came to mass market in the 20^th century. Foster Grant initially sold sunglasses at a stand on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey to guard against the summer sun.

“Athleisure” isn’t as contemporary as you might think. The term was first used in 1979 in Nation’s Business to describe garments designed to appear athletic. In 2016, Merriam-Webster added the term to the dictionary: “casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use.”

The goal of athleisure? To have a one-size-fits-all approach to your wardrobe, easily transitioning from running errands to hitting the gym to casual workwear.

The mini skirt was designed and popularized in the 1960s by Dame Mary Quant. She disliked the structured, tight garments of the 1950s, so she designed pleated miniskirts that were free and flowy. 

She opened a London boutique named Bazaar, where she sold her designs in a unique, youthful way: with music, free drinks, and mannequins holding guitars. Her aesthetic quickly became popular with the younger generations and was seen on models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. With her popularity, the love of the mini skirt took off!

The bikini got its name from a nuclear bomb! In 1946, French designers Jacques Heim and Louis Réard separately released similar designs of what we now know as the “bikini.” Heim named his design “atome” after the atom (the smallest particle of matter… like the smallest little bikini).

Réard named his “bikini” after Bikini Atoll, the name of a nuclear test site near Guam. The first public test of a nuclear bomb had taken place there just four days before the release of the “bikini” style. Réard wanted his bikini to have a similar explosive reaction when worn, and his version stuck.

Have you ever wondered why denim is called “denim”? The fabric was originally a twill cotton weave called “Serge de Nîmes,” because it originated in Nîmes, France. It’s believed this version replaced the wool and silk pants of the time with pure cotton, making them the predecessor of modern “jeans.”

Levi Strauss (from the brand Levi’s) and tailor Jacob Davis invented today’s blue jeans. In 1873, they combined copper rivet reinforcements with rigid denim to create “waist overalls,” which we now know as blue jeans.

Cool + quirky fashion history

How did people learn about fashion trends back in the day? The same way we do today… through fashion magazines and social media (aka word of mouth). The first fashion magazine, Mercure Galant, began publication in France in 1672, commenting on the latest clothing styles and trends throughout Europe.

While many seamstresses and tailors existed throughout history, the first true “fashion designer” might have been Charles Frederick Worth. An Englishman living in Paris in the mid-1800s, he was the “first” of many fashion points: the first person to use live models in fashion shows, the first to sew branded labels in his clothes, and the first to come up with the “princess line” dress and the “walking dress.” He was the first individual to open an haute couture house in 1858. This has dubbed him the father of fashion design and paved the way for luxury designers and brands even today.

The “red carpet” dates back to ancient Greece. Greek playwright Aeschylus mentioned a red carpet in “Agamemnon” in 458 BCE. The “red carpet treatment” can be found in American Newspapers in the early 1800s, where red carpets were used for aristocrats who wanted to demonstrate their high status in society.

Throughout history, red has held different connotations from royalty to war – but red always attracts attention.

The first Met Gala took place in December 1948. Fashion publicist and CFDA founder Eleanor Lambert used the gala to raise funds for the Costume Institute and mark the opening of their annual exhibit.

The Costume Institute is the only department at the Met that must fund itself, so it uses the Gala to do so. Since 1995, the Met Gala has raised over $145 million for the department.

The most expensive dress in the world is valued at $30 million. Designed by Faisal Abdullah, the Nightingale of Kuala Lumpur is a stunning crimson dress made of silk, taffeta, and over 750 real diamonds.

Dress codes 101  

There are many nuances to wedding dress codes, and each code carries its own expectations. Below are the most common dress codes you’ll run into and some outfit inspiration for each.

Black-tie

Black-tie weddings are the most formal dress code. Men usually wear tuxedos, and women should wear floor-length gowns.

To ensure you fit the dress code, look for dresses that come in a high-quality fabric like silk, chiffon, or taffeta. Cotton, linen, and other lighter fabrics often appear too casual for black-tie.

Black-tie doesn’t mean you need to wear a black dress. But when it comes to color, you should opt for a more subdued or evening-appropriate color like navy, burgundy, or emerald tones, as most black-tie affairs take place in the evening.

If the invitation says “black-tie creative/colorful,” you have some wiggle room to try out a more colorful or vibrant dress. 

If dresses aren’t your style, consider a luxury designer jumpsuit. A jumpsuit will work beautifully if it still fits the above criteria in terms of fabric, color, and length.

For shoes, consider heels, dressy flats, or high-end loafers. This is a chance to break out those fancy heels you never get the chance to wear. Accessories are a great place to add personality and whimsy to a black-tie look. You can opt for something dainty and elegant like teardrop earrings and a pendant necklace or bold and dazzling like chandelier earrings and a diamond belt.

Black-tie optional

Black-tie optional can be confusing. You’re not sure if the couple wants you to dress up or down, and you don’t want to be the odd one out. If you see black-tie optional on the wedding invitation, the bride and groom likely prefer the formality of black tie but don’t want to force their guests to invest in expensive dresses and tuxes. Basically, they’re giving their guests leeway to avoid undue financial stress. If your wallet allows, we recommend dressing in black tie when you see black tie optional dress codes.

Black tie doesn’t have to be a budget breaker. You can find gorgeous evening gowns on consignment for a fraction of their original ticket price.

• Consider renting an evening dress from a retailer like Rent the Runway. Rented dresses can be a great wallet-saver, especially if you don’t think you’ll rewear your new gown. However, these dresses can’t be altered or tailored, so they might not look as clean, fitted, and polished as those dresses you own and tailor to your body.

Formal  

“Formal” is a broader dress code than black-tie. The rules are similar in terms, but you may have more flexibility regarding colors, styles, and silhouettes. You can play around with hues, prints, hem lengths, and embellishments.

For formal wear, it doesn’t have to be a full-length gown. You can also consider dressy separates or tea-length dresses.

You want to wear a dress that fits the venue and season. For a summer garden wedding, you could wear an ankle-length dress in a bright color or floral print.

And for a winter wedding, you’d want a gown in a darker shade and thicker fabric.

If you’re unsure, err on the side of more formal versus less.

Semi-formal

Semi-formal wear can be a challenge because you don’t want to show up underdressed or overdressed. You’ll likely feel overdressed in a floor-length gown but underdressed in casual sundresses. Consider a mid- to knee-length skirt in soft, muted colors or minimalistic patterns.

The biggest differences lie in the colors, patterns, and fabrics. Even if the event is formal, you’re not going to show up to the beach in dark colors or heavy fabrics. You want to focus more on light colors, fun prints, and breathable matrials like lace or tulle for an effortless beach vibe that still feels elevated.

For beach attire, you can get away with a maxi dress. Although it’s technically floor-length, it can work well for less formal events if the material is light, breathable, and flowy.

Festive

For example, a formal festive event at an art museum might call for a patterned dress, one-of-a-kind stilettos, and whimsical hat.

If the couple getting married is having a themed wedding, “festive” is a way to ask their guests to dress in accordance with the theme. For example, a Lord of the Rings-themed wedding might have “festive” attire that calls for emerald gowns and elven accessories.

“Festive” can also refer to holiday-festive for weddings around the holidays. This encourages guests to dress up in formal holiday wear. Think velvet or lace fabrics, reds and greens, gold accents, and shimmery fabrics.

Festive dress code gives you room to play, but ensure you’re still aligned with the formality request, venue, and invitation style.

Casual 

A casual dress code usually doesn’t mean showing up in shorts and a t-shirt. Think business casual attire, like a pretty sundress, elevated jumpsuit, or a two-piece matching set. If you’re unsure what to wear, consider what you would wear to a fancy dinner with friends and family. The outfit doesn’t have to be formal, but you should still show respect for the couple by dressing appropriately and sophisticatedly.

If you’re uncertain, you can wear a cocktail dress and dress it down with less formal shoes.

A sundress with elevated accessories, like fancy stilettos and a cute clutch, can also strike a good balance between formal and casual.

What NOT to wear to a wedding

Colors:

• Steer clear of white, ivory, cream, champagne, nude, or light pastels that look like white. Although some brides won’t mind, you don’t want to wear the same color as the bride.
• If the bride is wearing a color other than white, you might want to avoid that color. For example, many brides in different cultures wear red, so you may not want to wear a similar shade of red.
• If you know the color palette of the bridesmaids’ dresses, avoid wearing that tone as well. You don’t want to look like you’re trying to be a bridesmaid if you’re not.
• Avoid neon colors or anything too bright, loud, or dramatic unless otherwise stated on the invitation.
• All-black outfits are sometimes considered too somber for a wedding. If you’re wearing a black dress for a black tie dress code, consider making it more festive with sparkly or colorful accessories and shoes.

Styles:

• Stay away from anything overly revealing, even if that’s your go-to style. Low-cut necklines, short hems, and sheer cut-outs are generally not formal enough for most weddings.

We talked to our design experts at tankublog to find out what will be particularly hot for spring 2024, and we were excited to learn that many of spring’s hottest trends are classics already found in most closets. With clever styling and easy updates – like adding a pop of color or layering a crisp button-down – you can make your looks feel fresh and new for the season. So, what are we wearing for spring 2024?

Short shorts

The past two years have seen the resurgence of Y2K fashion, and now fashion is beginning to shift towards the next decade: the 2010s. With that comes the return of – you guessed it – the short-short. The spring 2024 fashion shows in Milan were littered with micro-shorts, even from luxury designers like Chanel and Ferragamo.

This year, we’re seeing short shorts paired with something oversized and unexpected on top. Stella McCartney layered a billowing coat over tiny hotpants, and Max Mara showed an oversized blazer with tiny shorts.

Short shorts may still be too rogue for everyday office-wear, but consider them for casual wear. For a more modest but still trendy vibe, add tights, lace-up shoes, or other leg accessories to feel more comfortable when styling.

Oversized dressing 

Oversized garments have been on and off the fashion scene for years, and this season, we’re seeing a resurgence of oversized pieces in every facet of the wardrobe. In particular, designers like Bottega Veneta are redefining workwear with roomy tailoring, like more voluminous pea coats and longline skirts.

To make oversized pieces work on you, focus on balance. Pair oversized items with more fitted pieces to create effective proportions that don’t overwhelm your figure.

Oversized dressing also calls for aggressive accessorizing. Accessories add structure and definition to an otherwise flowy silhouette. Belts cinch oversized dresses, tops, and outerwear to define your waist, and statement jewelry can help draw the eyes upward.

Drop waists

Low-rise silhouettes have enjoyed a resurgence in recent seasons, courtesy of the Y2K revival, and spring 2024 is taking low waistlines even lower. We’re stepping into the season of elongated torsos, with major designers showcasing figure-hugging bodices with dropped waists paired with flowing skirts. The key here is to create a harmonious balance between structure and fluidity, keeping the drop waist tight and structured and flaring at the “low rise” point of your hips. 

Drop waists are most flattering on individuals with longer torsos, as the lower waist elongates the upper body for a purposefully sleek and streamlined silhouette.

If drop waists don’t suit your body type, don’t be afraid to keep your mid- and high-rises. You can play around with proportions that work for your body type, like layering a cropped jacket over high-waisted trousers to elongate your legs, rather than your torso.

Sheer separates

Transparent clothing is transitioning from the runway into high-street fashion and everyday casual wear. This trend can come in the form of “naked dressing,” but it can also have a more modest vibe, like using sheer as an accent piece over go-to basics.

Throw a mesh top over an undershirt or bralette, and pair it with oversized pants for an ultra-trendy, edgy look.

Color of spring 2024: red

Hot pink Barbiecore was all the rage for summer 2023, so we’re not surprised to see the fashion world take it up a notch with pink’s fierce older sister, red. The spring 2024 fashion shows were anything but subtle with this color. We saw many designers cloaking their models in saturated reds that make a big, bold statement.

Red comes in various shades, from fiery crimson to deep burgundy, so use this trend however it suits your style and skin tone. If you have warm undertones, opt for shades like tomato red or coral. For cooler undertones, try hues like ruby or raspberry. 

Let red take the stage. Whether you incorporate it through small touches in accessories or you’re sporting a full red dress, keep the rest of your outfit neutral to make the red stand out.

Neutral of spring 2024: white

White is the bright, strong neutral for spring. Wearing white is a timeless, refreshing choice that evokes images of blooming flowers, sunny days, and crisp, clean aesthetics. • This season’s light blue is reminiscent of cloudless skies and tranquil lakes—perfect for a spring spent outdoors. Sky blue looks beautiful as an accent to white outfits, and it also works as a gorgeous focal point with navy or blue-toned monochrome ensembles.
• Pale yellow is always trendy, but this spring is seeing a yellow that’s slightly more lemony and saturated than it is pale. 2. Fresh, feminine florals are forever.

Nothing says spring like flowers, so there’s no better way to praise the springtime than by donning your favorite floral prints. Sometimes floral prints get a bad reputation for being too “loud” or “old,” but that’s definitely an over-generalization. Florals can be one of the easiest, chicest, and most timeless additions to every girl’s spring wardrobe – you just need to find the floral pattern that best suits your wardrobe. That means choosing a floral print that flatters your unique complexion, body type, and personal style. For example, petite women with rounder features look dazzling in small or mini floral patterns, while taller women with more angular features are stunning in large and bold florals.

Spring is showing a lot of heirloom florals and “tea party” florals, aka floral prints that are reminiscent of past eras. Think floral prints you might see in your grandma’s closet – but not in a bad way! This kind of print is more subtle and spread out, with smaller and more delicate flowers in pale or pastel colors. This floral pattern is beautiful for a feminine, cottagecore aesthetic, and it’s both trendy and cyclical (this kind of floral isn’t always timeless, but it seems to come in and out of style every few seasons, so it’s still a decent investment).

Still, heirloom florals aren’t right for all women. If small florals aren’t your style, you can never go wrong with colorful flowers printed on a white or black background. Search for a floral pattern that makes you look and feel good and you’ll be able to wear it for springs to come. If you just want to dip your toes into floral patterns for the first time, try incorporating florals in your accessories, like a light neck scarf or a warm-weather handbag.

3. Or substitute florals for fruits.

Tangential to floral prints are fruit patterns, which are equally springy but with a little extra boost of sugary sweetness. We’ve seen a lot of spring designs with small fruits either as the sole focal point or added into other floral or retro designs. Peaches, pears, limes, berries, apples, and cherries are all popular fruit patterns, but there aren’t many rules when it comes to this style. You can opt for a fruit print based on your favorite fruit or choose something that matches the color scheme of your personal uniform. For example, if you tend to wear a lot of pinks and ivories, you might want to opt for a peach pattern to pair with the other pieces in your closet. Or if you tend to wear a lot of whites, cherries and apples can add a pop of red color to a more neutral outfit.

4. Step into spring with bold stripes.

Stripes are grabbing attention, and we’re loving how they’re being used. This season’s stripes are thick and bold, rather than thin and retro. We’re seeing a lot of heavy black-and-white stripes as well as color-blocking ones, and a lot of outfits are pairing stripes with complementary colors to create a bright and bold outfit that’s perfect for spring.

I love that stripes can work with even the most neutral of outfits – like white or black – while also adding that “wow” factor that neutral outfits often crave. Stripes also change the silhouette of an outfit, elongating or halting the body’s lines to create a flowing or contrasting look.

Stripes might not seem traditionally springy, but they’re particularly hot for spring when paired with neutrals, bright colors, or even in conjunction with florals. Don’t be afraid to play around with stripes this season to see how they can enhance or change up your basic work outfits or your weekend brunch styles.

5. Add more timeless neutrals to your closet.

Neutrals are endlessly chic and polished. The best part is – you probably already have this spring trend in your closet! Neutrals always look put-together, whether they’re used in a monochromatic ensemble or the foundation for other patterns like stripes or florals. The only difference between spring neutrals and fall neutrals is the material – and sometimes you can even extend your neutral pieces year-round if you choose a classic organic material like cotton.

Neutral colors include white, grey, black, ivory, beige, taupe, khaki, and brown. In general, you want to stick to either the white, grey, black palette or the ivory and brown palette when creating an all-neutral look, but you might want to have a few pieces in each neutral “family” so you can mix and match with other patterns and prints in your closet.

For spring, you can’t go wrong with whites, ivory, and light neutrals. Pair them with your favorite white-base floral print, a daring color block stripe pattern, or even add a few pastels. You’ll always look good in an ivory outfit with a pop of lilac or in a light grey ensemble with hints of pale yellow.

6. Go wild with animal prints.

When you think spring, you probably don’t think animal prints, but some of your favorite fashion designers are here to change your mind. Along with the stripes theme, we’ve seen some more monochromatic zebra patterns hit the scene, particularly when paired with bright or neon colors. The neutral blacks and browns in leopard are also popular for spring when paired with lighter neutrals, like khakis or ivory.

I am a huge fan of animal prints. Although different patterns come in and out of fashion, like how snake may be trending one year and zebra another year, you really can’t go wrong with a faux animal print that matches your wardrobe. 7. Lay in the sun with lace.

Lace is one of my favorite year-round textures. Paired with dark colors and velvet, it’s perfect for the holidays. Add some white and pastels and it’s gorgeously springy. Whether it’s a white lace dress, a plain tee with lace sleeves, or pops of lace on a maxi skirt, you can’t go wrong when you add this elegant and refined texture to your spring wardrobe. Lace will never go out of style, particularly if you choose a lace piece that flatters your body type.

Throw on your favorite sunglasses, a cute purse, a pair of sandals, and you can take your lace from a day in the park to an evening out with friends with just a refresh of your lipstick.

8. Travel with your tropical prints.

There’s nothing worse than having an entire vacation wardrobe that you only get to wear a week or two of the year when you’re on a tropical vacation. I love packing for a getaway vacay because I always feel like I can wear anything I want, be anyone I want, and do anything that moves me. There’s a sense of freedom in going somewhere new and adding some of those tropical vibes into your daily wardrobe might just be the confidence boost you need to make this spring your best yet—even when you’re staying in your hometown.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Cradle to Cradle (C2C)

The C2C certification promotes the concept of closed-loop products, aka those that can be safely returned to nature or industry at the end of their life. This process assesses products based on their environmental impact and recyclability in terms of material health, product circularity, social fairness, water and soil stewardship, and clean air and climate protection. Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC)

The SAC developed the Higg Index, a tool that measures the environmental and social performance of brands’ supply chains. Higg has become one of the apparel industry’s leading environmental and social assessments by measuring the entire value chain from start to finish. If something is rated well on the Higg Index, it’s highly sustainable – both environmentally and socially – from start to finish.

How to avoid greenwashing

“Greenwashing” is when brands falsely claim to be sustainable for marketing purposes – while not actuallyadhering to these principles in practice.
